I’d love to start this intro with a confession:

No one really gets quantum. There are so many cool topics in our world that we understand to a stiflingly specific degree.

Everyone loves to joke about Darwin Claus climbing down the atheist chimney on “natural-selection-mas” eve, but at the end of the day evolution has been so well documented to the point where an army of super smart people mapped out the entire human genome a decade ago. On the other hand, we’ve spent centuries exploring quantum mechanics and applying it to the furthest reaches of our academia, and yet there’s this mystique that no one in the field can really avoid. I’m no different, but as someone who loves to be proven wrong on things, I’ve found myself plummeting down this rabbit hole recently. The very concept of superposition, which I’ve heard described as a particle in two places at once: it feels like fantasy.

I’m all too familiar with that fantasy in my favorite genre of fiction: superhero comics. I literally grew up watching the Hulk deliver “BTA” to Loki in Stark’s tower. At the age of 5 I was hooked onto the global politics and espionage of Hydra’s infiltration of the US government. Reading about Green Lantern’s traversing the cosmos and unearthing the details of intergalactic threats cooled me down in light of the ragebait that was multiplication tables.

In all the cliche ways, this blog is my passion project, my baby, whatever you want to call it. I want to bring the science back into my favorite science fiction, while still appreciating what the fiction has to offer. There are some things the heroes get right, but a world of wrong to go with it. (I’m looking at you “flux capacitor”). Hopefully you find the mistakes I’m writing about worthwhile. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the quantum mechanics. Either way, I appreciate you being here.
